讲座简介

By the early twentieth-century, Jane Austen’s novels were very famous, but were often received as gentle and unthreatening comedies. By the 1940s, however, they were receiving serious critical study, study that has never abated. This lecture looks at how Austen’s novels were appropriated by different critical schools of thought over the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. But it will also consider how she became a global phenomenon - by means of cheap editions, print media coverage, and various kinds of adaptation: modernisations, continuations, fan-fic, movies, TV series and vlogs. As the lecturer is an Australian based in New Zealand, she will also allude to some of the ways Austen and her novels were received in those countries, both former colonies of Britain.
